Tamil Nadu Drives to Dominate the Electric Vehicle Market
Tamil Nadu, a prominent automotive manufacturing hub globally, has achieved a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Out of every five EVs sold in India this year, two were manufactured in Tamil Nadu. Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ VAHAN Dashboard reveals that as of September 20 this year, a total of 1,044,600 EVs were registered across the country, with an impressive 414,802 of them being produced in Tamil Nadu. As of the latest update, EV sales have reached 1,063,812 units.
This achievement can be attributed to several leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) operating in the state, including Ola Electric, TVS Motor, Ather Energy, and Ampere Vehicles. These companies have established their EV manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu, and the state now anticipates investments totaling Rs 50,000 crore in the EV sector by 2025, which is expected to create around 150,000 jobs.
The government recognizes the immense potential of the EV sector and its pivotal role in achieving sustainable development goals. Tamil Nadu is poised to make the EV sector a priority, marking the beginning of a revolution in sustainable transportation.
Notably, three of the top EV manufacturers are located in Krishnagiri district, often referred to as India's EV capital. Ola Electric reported sales of 175,608 units as of September 20, while TVS Motor sold 112,949 EVs, and Ather Energy achieved sales of 77,764 units.
Other key players, such as Ampere Vehicles (Greaves Electric) in Ranipet with 41,757 registered units, BYD India in Kanchipuram with 1,725 units, Stellantis (PCA Automobiles) in Tiruvallur with 1,533 units, E-Royce Motors in Coimbatore with 1,242 units, Hyundai Motor India in Kanchipuram with 1,023 units, Reep Motors in Chengalpattu with 810 units, and TI Clean Mobility in Tiruvallur with 391 units, have also contributed to the state's remarkable performance in the EV sector.
Tamil Nadu has set its sights on becoming the global epicenter for electric vehicles. Leading industry players have already provided valuable insights and expressed enthusiasm about the progress being made in the state. The government, armed with deep industry knowledge, is actively promoting the EV ecosystem, encompassing battery manufacturing, charging infrastructure development, and more. The recent introduction of the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy, 2023, underscores the government's commitment to this endeavor.
The state government has identified six cities—Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, and Chennai—as focal points for EV development. Tamil Nadu's advantages in this sector include a skilled workforce, a well-established network of ancillary suppliers, a thriving automotive and auto component manufacturing ecosystem, and robust infrastructure and logistics support systems.
